Internet Safety for Minors

Posted by Unknown Rabu, 12 Februari 2014 0 komentar

"I received a photo of a stranger in the mail" or "I'm being chased by colleagues in a social networks" can be warning signs of security problems. Do you know how to proceed?

Today I will give you 6 easy tips that you can follow.

The previous thoughts should always be present and clear for adults and children, indicating best practices to adopt in every situation.
Studies have shown that young people have difficulty distinguishing on-line dangers . Sharing a sensual photograph through the mobile phone can not be seen as a problem and a risk, and the notions of privacy look increasingly diffuse at a time when the first thing that most young people do when they wake up is grab your smartphone and where the "real" friendships are becoming less differentiated from the "virtual" friendships.
On the Internet, there are many guides for parents and educators, more direct and well-made than others, but the difficulty often goes by the rules and able to transmit certain messages, considering the propensity for risk and consider that the elderly  "do not know any of this."
Leaving the communication door open and not imposing too many constraints are two rules that come from common sense that requires education, but there are other tips and best practices that can be shared, preferably through the (good) example in first person.

1. Protect data and identity
The use of strong keywords, combinations of letters and numbers without recourse to the more common "password" and "123456789" is one of the first recommendations for online security at all ages. It may be difficult to realize to the younger that you must have a password that is difficult to crack, and that this should never be shared with friends, even the close ones, but this is a first step in protecting yourself.

2. Be careful with strangers and 'Wonder' schemes
Probably most people explain to their children that they should not talk to strangers on the street. The same can apply to the on-line world, even if the "character" on the other side of the screen appears to have the same age and preferences. Unfortunately it is usual that people with less clear intentions hide behind friendly "appearances". However try to not be so strict, on-line friendships can occur - I do have a couple of friends that I first met on-line.

3. A logged session must be terminated
One of the most frequent problems of identity theft happens using public computers, where the sessions in social networks and email accounts are active after the user finish his/her task. Even with time limits imposed on some platforms for automatic closure of the sessions, the most appropriate procedure is to always manually "log-off".

4. Passwords also in mobile phone and tablet
Yes... it seems too much work having to enter a password - or a code of gestures - every time you use your phone, especially if you use it every 2 minutes, but this is one of the safest ways to ensure that your information does not fall into unwarranted hands. And by the way, you should also add password lock on tablets and to the laptop screens. Here apply the same rules.
There are some useful tools/apps to delete the data remotely or block access when the phone is stolen.

5. Learn to report
To report an abusive practice is not the same as being a snitch. If there is a violent image, xenophobic or pornographic you may report it, thus preventing the abuse to continue. This applies to search engines, and also social networks.

6. Use security settings
Have you explored the security settings of the browser, search engines and social networks? There are some simple steps you can do to prevent your data and images to be shared publicly, normally this is done in the definitions of groups of friends with whom you can extend ties of greater confidence.

Final thoughts
Many of these tips are useful in a generic way, but it is also worth exploring the tools for protecting minors from operating systems, especially if they are young and still do not understand certain rules for using the Internet.

NSA intercepts new computers before it reaches consumers

Posted by Unknown Senin, 30 Desember 2013 0 komentar

The scandals associated with the NSA did not stop to rise and they are becoming more complicated and intricate. Every week brings new information detailing the various activities of this agency.

The latest revelation shows that one of the special units of this agency intercepted orders from computer equipment and software. At the same time news broke that they may have infected firewalls from different manufacturers with backdoors. The latest denounces appeared in two published articles by the German newspaper Spiegel, which are based on documents available to it.
  1. http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/the-nsa-uses-powerful-toolbox-in-effort-to-spy-on-global-networks-a-940969.html
  2. http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/catalog-reveals-nsa-has-back-doors-for-numerous-devices-a-940994.html

In these two stories it is presented two modes of North American Security Agency action, revealing that there had been interception orders, where it was placed software that would allow the NSA to monitor or access data remotely, before even these have reached their recipients.

This capability is in charge of a special unit of the NSA that intercepts and orders and is able to add software or hardware, depending on what is desired. This unit has access to a wide range of hardware and can access the orders that are made in different factories in several areas of the United States. In addition to this unit, there is another that can go farther and infect and compromise access multiple firewalls and network equipment from several manufacturers. The gateway to this equipment is hidden in the discs from various manufacturers that have put them there without knowing.

The security breach these discs are permanent and even if users do a cleaning of the discs these backdoors will not be eliminated. By having this hidden software on disks, can easily compromise the equipment and access them remotely without the knowledge of who uses them.

Manufacturers targeted and that saw their equipment compromised ranging from the Juniper Networks firewalls and network assets of Cisco and Huawei. Disc manufacturers that saw their devices with embedded backdoors in their firmwares are Western Digital, Seagate, Maxtor and Samsung.

As far it is know, none of these companies had knowledge of these capabilities and shortcomings. This is just one of the discoveries that have been brought to the public and show how the NSA conducts its operations.

The End of Winamp(?)

Posted by Unknown Kamis, 19 Desember 2013 0 komentar
The Winamp developers advertised on their website the end of the development of this media player to the public. Since 1997, the year of its launch, Winamp introduced himself as a revolutionary reader as never seen at the time. With almost 16 years serving the community Winamp continues to be one of the most iconic free media players in the world. The reader was being distributed for free, and also proved a PRO version, paid. Originally released by the Nullsoft became later owned by giant AOL who now turns out to exterminate this player in December 20.

In the its website you can read the following: "Winamp.com and associated web services will no longer be available past December 20, 2013. Additionally, Winamp Media players will no longer be available for download. Please download the latest version before that date. See release notes for latest improvements to this last release. Thanks for supporting the Winamp community for over 15 years." - Winamp

WinAmp always support to a variety of multimedia and a respective number of known formats. Support plug-ins and skins made it even better known for its flexibility which were always accompanied by rich graphics equalizer, making the delight newbies, nerds the experts.
Winamp was developed by Justin Frankel and Dmitry Boldyrev and quickly saw its due to a young Internet at the time. In 1998 WinAmp was already the most downloaded software in addition to the Windows operating system software.

Is this the end of a chapter?
Some sources indicate that AOL may be negotiating with some companies to sell this software and its service. From AOL point of view, the Winamp software never had a very definite purpose and without an evolution path. It is also true that there is less market for these type of media since the market is moving towards stream services dependent on the Internet...
Another solution would be putting Winamp as open-source, some fans of the venerable software have launched a "Save Winamp" website and petition asking AOL either to keep Winamp alive or to open source its code. The petition was started by Web hosting company owner Peter Zawacki of Australia, and it has more than 12,000 supporters so far. "If AOL allows it to go open source it WILL live on forever and be in the hands of people who love it and use it every day," the petition states.
People are therefore wondering if AOL is willing to release Winamp's source code but haven't yet received a response...

Winamp was (and still is) one of my favourite programs. From the moment I started using computers I always followed the same steps: first, install an operating system software; second, install Winamp. I understand that just like everything there is always an end but it will be a sad day when it finally leaves us.
On the positive side of things, you can still download and use the current (and last) version of Winamp. It will still be a very useful media player in the immediate future. Why don't you give it a try?

"Winamp, it really whips the llama's ass"

Are the "O Mundo de Mikey" readers, still using Winamp or did you migrated to other software like Aimp or MPC?

UPDATE 7/01/2014: It is already 2014 and AOL is still allowing the download of Winamp. Let's hope that this player does not disappears from the market.
