Welcoming the Contributors

Posted by Unknown Sabtu, 15 Februari 2014 0 komentar

"O Mundo de Mikey" updates!

Starting from now "O Mundo de Mikey" is going to include other contributors! These are going to be contributors from different areas and backgrounds.

The blog has no central theme of discussion so the contributions will be mainly focusing in knowledge and experience sharing - the motto "Let's give a bit back and share our knowledge and experience with the world!".
This will bring different perspectives and ideals into equation, will there be clashes? Possibly, but discussion is essential for learning and it can generate even more questions!

Let's keep an eye on the coming posts...

It's Evolution, baby!

Posted by Unknown Selasa, 11 Februari 2014 0 komentar

Two main questions: Is creation a viable model of origins in today's modern, scientific era? Why is this post with a strange title and introductory image?

Evolution vs Creationism

Some days ago there was a very interesting debate between the leading creation apologist and bestselling Christian author Ken Ham which was joined at the Creation Museum by Emmy Award-winning science educator and CEO of the Planetary Society Bill Nye to discuss Evolution vs. Creation.

For a lot of people this is an interesting topic and many do pick a side. For me it was also interesting to read a Pew Survey that has shown that one in three Americans does not believe in the theory of Darwinian evolution:

The Pew Research Religion & Public Life Project report released Monday found that 33% think “humans and other living things have existed in their present form since the beginning of time.” Sixty percent agreed with evolution. Among those who agree with human evolution, about half attribute it to “natural processes such as natural selection.” Whereas, 24% of adults say “a supreme being guided the evolution of living things.”
The survey also found disagreement across political and religious lines. Among white evangelical Protestants, 64% say that humans have existed in their present form since the beginning of time. The survey found that half of black Protestants responded the same way. Whereas 78% of white mainline Protestants say that humans and other living things have evolved over time. Seventy-six percent of the religiously unaffiliated, 68% of white non-Hispanic Catholics and 53% of Hispanic Catholics agreed with evolution. Republicans are less likely to say humans evolved compared to Democrats or independents, Less than half of conservatives or 43% agreed with evolution compared to 67% of liberals and 65% of independents.
The survey is based on telephone interviews conducted March 21-April 8, 2013, with a national sample of 1,983 adults. The margin of error for the results is plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Since during these days there is a bit of discussion on this topic, I will also share some food for thought - a simple and quick explanation on Evolution.

In nature, we normally observe the following:
  1. Animals reproduce and have offspring, but they do not reproduce exact copies. For instance, children may look like their parents, but not exactly, there is a variation due to several genetic factors.
  2. These differences between close generations (e.g. parents and their children) tend to be small, but also unpredictable in the near term, lets see an example: lets suppose that a random child is taller than average or has an extra finger, that child is not taller or extra-fingered because his/her parents needed to reach high things or play extra piano keys. So in a "shorter-term" there is no big evolution between parents and offspring, there is a random variation, rather than being a direct response to the environment. Those variations come from random differences in genes.
  3. In a lot of situations animals often have more offspring than the environment can support and animals that are BEST SUITED to the environment tend to have more likelihood to survive and reproduce. For instance, if there is a drought and there is not enough water, offspring that need less water or that are slightly smaller and so can get in faster to get more water will tend to survive and reproduce. What we are seeing with this example is a process of natural selection which preserves some changes (genetic code) between generations in a non-random way.
As a result, over time, the proportion of traits, what we would now refer to as the frequency of genes in a population, will change, in keeping with natural selection. This is evolution.

I find hard to understand the creationism side and I can not agree with the belief that “humans and other living things have existed in their present form since the beginning of time”, but maybe that is because I did not have a religious background... although I was born in a very religious country.

So with an open-mind I am still waiting to hear a credible creationism view. Do you know one?

It's Evolution, baby!

You might be wondering why this post is call "It's evolution, baby"... Well, that sentence is taken from a Pearl Jam song "Do the Evolution". I was fortunate enough to see them live quite recently at BigDayOut 2014 in Sydney... and I was double-lucky since they played this song. See their video below:

When speaking about "Do the Evolution", vocalist Eddie Vedder stated:

"That song is all about someone who's drunk with technology, who thinks they're the controlling living being on this planet. It's another one I'm not singing as myself."

Pearl Jam has stated that the novel Ishmael influenced the writing of Yield (album where this song is taken), and according to the novel's writer, Daniel Quinn, this song comes the closest to expressing the ideas of the book. Vedder stated:

"This Daniel Quinn book, Ishmael...I've never recommended a book before, but I would actually, in an interview, recommend it to everyone....But this book, it's kind of the book of my ... My whole year has been kind of with these thoughts in mind. And on an evolutionary level, that man has been on this planet for 3 million years, so that you have this number line that goes like this [hands wide apart]. And that we're about to celebrate the year 2000, which is this [holds hands less than one inch apart]. So here's this number line; here's what we know and celebrate. This book is a conversation with a man and an ape. And the ape really has it all together. He kinda knows the differences between him and the man, and points out how slight they are, and it creates an easy analogy for what man has done, thinking that they were the end-all. That man is the end-all thing on this earth. That the earth was around even so much longer before the 3 million years. Fifty million years of sharks and all these living things. Then man comes out of the muck, and 3 million years later he's standing, and now he's controlling everything and killing it. Just in the last hundred! Which is just a speck on this line. So what are we doin' here? This is just a good reminder...And I'm anxious to see what happens. You know, I've got a good seat for whatever happens next. It'll be interesting."

Essentially, this song is about the human evolution when thousands of years ago when humans became more than 'just an animal' and did not need to live by the fundamental rules of ecology. Some scholars defend that the human race is jealous, greedy, and war-prone by nature. Some defend that living outside of our ecosystem's rules has being destroying the planet, expanded our population to breaking point and may very well prove to be our extinction... not so good news for evolution-defenders!

Today I will share 10 photos taken in Australia with a Portuguese flavour on it. For a born Portuguese these are photos that are meant to kill the saudade from home!

 10. Billboard

Emirates billboard in a Sydney train station.

9. Ogalo

 A chicken fast-food chain.

8. Wrap

Portuguese wrap at Coles supermarket.

7. Oporto

Another fast-food chain serving... chicken!

6. Sweet Belem

For me this is the best pastry store in Sydney

5. Silvas

They serve the best charcoal chicken in Sydney but their service could be so much better...

4. Train

Another Emirates ad. After a day's work I can not think of a best train to bring me home.

3. Nando's

It is between a restaurant-chain and a fast-food chain, but of course... they serve chicken.

2. Petersham

The Portuguese neighbourhood in Sydney. Every year there is the Petersham/Portuguese festival.

1. Passport

Not a photo of Sydney or Australia but of my origins.

Final comments
It is interesting to see that a lot of this photos relate to food and more particularly to... chicken. If any Australian visits Portugal I think he/she will be surprised to realise that we do not tend to eat that much chicken. :-)

The oldest building in the U.S.A., 12th century Ancient Spanish Monastery, with air conditioning.

 3. Bike for Bus

Public buses in Miami have structures that allow you to put bicycles in front of the vehicle.

4. Rich and Famous

A boat departing from central station in direction of the islands of the rich and famous.

Top 10 Funny Aussie Photos

Posted by Unknown Rabu, 15 Januari 2014 0 komentar

Today I will share 10 of my favourite photos taken in Australia. These are Aussie pearls that are meant to make you smile!

(Apologies for the watermark but I've been told that I should put a copyright notice in the images themselves)

Nº10 - Michael is the best

Some days before this graffiti was made Michael, the building manager of our building, sent a letter to all residents informing that some residents were making too much rubish...

Nº9 - Eating out in Australia

Australia has many Asian emigrants and due to that reason there are many Asian restaurants. The problem? Well... sometimes it is difficult to understand the menu!

Nº8 - Sydney Mardi Grass

The Sydney Mardi Gras is an annual LGBT pride parade and festival in Sydney, Australia, attended by hundreds of thousands of people from around Australia and overseas. The sticker above was given to "selected" people, the ones that were too hot 2 handel!

Nº7 - To score or not to score

It is important to score in that store... or else!

Nº6 - Keep it brief

The image above belongs to a mural in Byron Bay, a beach town. I will leave this image for your own interpretation!

Nº5 - Bear Grylls who?

The sticker above was in an Aussie truck. In Australia going-out camping can be a risk (there are many venomous and dangerous animals), so most of the Aussie campers are as capable to endure in the wild as Bear Grylls (without a safety team around...).

Nº4 - Lost Boyfriend

This notice was at a store window. The image is from Chris Hemsworth a famous Australian actor that portrayed Thor in the latest Marvel franchises.

Nº3 - Turn up naked

In Australia there are many ways to get discounts, one is to turn up naked at the stores.

Nº 2 - Cow House

Some neighbours really love cows!

Nº 1 -Trespassers welcome

This is a private propert... I mean private poetry place, so why not join in?

Urban Agriculture - Part IV (update)

Posted by Unknown Jumat, 03 Januari 2014 0 komentar

Today we will have a look into our little balcony in Sydney CBD to see the progress of our veggies and plants.

What we decided to harvest today:
  1. One capsicum;
  2. A lot of chillies
  3. A bit of mint
Not bad for a small balcony, not bad!

The mint is growing very well, it gets some light but it loves a bit of shade as well and it does not require a lot of water. From tea, drink additive, to fragrance you can use for your house, this is a perfect plant to have.

We decided to plant more coriander seeds since we realise that we are addicted to it and we use it in a lot of our dishes. The chives themselves look fine, we mainly use for soups an Asian dishes.

We've been eating a lot of lettuce as you can see in the picture below. "Perpetual" lettuce is great since you can keep on taking just a couple of leaves at a time, so it will last longer!

We also have some oregano and some other small lettuces in another pot, but this was starting to be used by pigeons as a nest so we had to put some wooden skewers to keep them away.

This was a small update. "O Mundo de Mikey" is trying to show and educate you that growing your own edibles is possible, even in constrained places as a small balcony in the middle of a big city. Yes it is possible, give it a try!

Improve Your Fitness (Stamina, Abs, Legs)

Posted by Unknown Senin, 30 Desember 2013 1 komentar

There was already an article about 2014 resolutions, however I started to read more and more that the main resolution for the new year's is normally losing weight. Seeing this, here at "O Mundo de Mikey" I also want to help you, the reader, with this type of resolutions.
Some months ago, we (in our house) decided to also improve our fitness. Of course it helped that we are living close to a park with fitness stations, but "O Mundo de Mikey" will share with you some of the tips that you can also follow follow especially if you are on a tight budget or you do not want to pay for a gym membership.
First, do not do exercises just with the goal of weight reduction, doing exercises is important for your own well-being. Secondly, on  a tight budget, trying to get fit without gym membership is not easy and it requires discipline, you can also check if there are free outdoor fitness facilities in your local area. At some point in time you have probably walked past a “Fitness Station” in a park, and ignored it, or tried to explain to your child that it does not “do” anything,. Well let me tell you that it is not play equipment, it is for people getting fit... and it does work, trust "O Mundo de Mikey" on this.

So what plan do we normally follow? See below...

1. Warm-up
Before starting to do exercises you need to allow your body to warm-up. Not only it will prevent injuries but it will also give a boost on your cardio, meaning that you will also burn fat faster.
Tip: Do a minimum of 25 minutes run, e.g. a couple of laps around a park. Try to push yourself a little but there is no need to push for a maximum speed. Try to breath slowly.

2. The Drills
Now that your body is warmer, it is time to do some exercise drills. Please be aware, that you should personalise the effort of the drills based on your condition. Let's follow what Ausafe recomends.

2.1. First Fitness Stop
After the warm up, stretching before a workout allows the body to become more pliable and less prone to injury. The muscles that should be stretched will be the main muscles groups that are going to be worked on during the session. These stretches should be performed whilst standing and gently held between 8-10 seconds. This is so that your heart rate does not drop too much during this time. However, this practice is now being questioned. Some say that a warm up is sufficient and would rather leave the stretches until the end of their session.

After the exercises do a 10 second sprint (fast-run) - maximum speed.

2.2. Second Fitness Stop

After the exercises do a 10 second sprint (fast-run) - maximum speed.

2.3. Third Fitness Stop

After the exercises do a 10 second sprint (fast-run) - maximum speed.

2.4. Fourth Fitness Stop

3.  Rehydration
It is important to rehydrate since you probably lost some body water.
Tip: Fill your mouth a couple of times with water but do not drink it at first. At the third time do drink a bit of water.

4. Last Run
Do a minimum of 10 minutes run, this will be your final run, no need for maximum speed. Try to breath slowly. This last run can also be used to return to you home, where the rest of the exercises can be done.
Tip: If you live in a building use the stairs!

5. Exercise Your Abs
You just finished your run and you are now at home sweating? Great! You are almost there. The area of the belly and/or the "muffin-top" are the ones that most people are a bit self-aware so let's do some short but intensive abs exercises. Here are some different levels for people with different fitness conditions:

8 Minutes Abs - Level 1 (10.49)

8 Minutes Abs - Level 2 (10.00)

8 Minutes Abs - Level 3 (11.35)

6. Finalise Your Work-Out with Stretches
It is important to stretch your muscles after doing exercises. Post stretches or maintenance stretches are just as or if not more important than stretching prior to your workout, after your warm up. The main muscles groups used during the session are the ones that need to stretch. If a muscle group has been continually contracted in the main workout, stretches should be performed to get the muscle back to their normal length. They may also help to alleviate potential soreness. A maintenance stretch is usually held for between 10-20 seconds.

Stretching helps to:
  • reduce muscle tension, and make the body feel more relaxed
  • increase the range of motion
  • prevent muscle strains: a strong pre-stretched muscle resists stress better than a strong unstretched muscle
  • prevent joint strains
  • reduce the risk of back problems
  • prepare the body for strenuous exercise
  • increase ‘body awareness’
  • promote circulation
  • for females, reduces the severity of painful menstruation (dysmenorrhea)
  • increase the learning, practice, and performance of many types of skilled movements
  • reduce muscular soreness
You should not stretch if:
  • there has been a recent bone fracture, sprain or strain
  • the range of motion is in some way limited
  • the joint is inflamed or infected
  • if you have signs of osteoporosis
  • you experience pain when the joint is moved or the muscle is stretched
  • you are suffering from certain diseases of the skin or blood

6.1 Quadricep Stretch
The quadriceps stretch is a great stretch that is essential for any good post-exercise routine, especially if you participate in high amounts of cardiovascular exercise, or strength training exercises that target the quadriceps muscles. In order to perform this stretch properly, start by standing tall with your arms relaxed by your sides and your feet planted firmly under your hips. Carefully bend your right knee, bringing your right foot towards your buttocks. Reach your right hand behind your back, and grab your right foot with your right hand. Hold this pose for 20 second, and release. Perform this exercise on the left leg in order to achieve optimal results.

6.2 Hamstring Stretch
The hamstring stretch is another stretch that is commonly used by individuals who engage in high amounts of cardiovascular activity or perform strength training exercises that target the hamstring muscles. This exercise is performed by sitting on the ground or on an exercise mat, with your legs extended in front of your body. Sit tall, with your spine in a straight line. Reach your arms overhead towards the sky, and take a deep breath. As you exhale your breath, bend forward from the waist, and reach your arms towards your feet. Extend your arms as much as possible, holding onto your calves, ankles, or feet if possible. As with the quadricep stretch, hold this pose for 20 seconds for best results.

6.3 Side Stretch
Unlike the first two stretches, which targeted the muscles of the lower body, the side stretch focuses on the abdominal muscles. This exercise can be performed by standing tall with your arms relaxed by your sides. Place your right hand on your right hip. At the same time, extend your left arm overhead, towards the sky. Inhale deeply, and during exhalation, bend your body to the right, bringing your left arm up and overhead. You should feel a stretch along your left ribcage. Hold this pose for 20 seconds, relax, and repeat on the other side of your body.

6.4 Calf Stretch
Finally, the calf stretch is a great way to loosen up the muscles in the lower part of your leg. Start by facing a wall, standing tall. Place both hands against the wall, and step your right foot back approximately two to three feet behind your left foot. Bend your left knee, while at the same time keeping your right leg extended. Your right heel should stay flat on the ground, and your leg should be relatively straight. Hold this pose for 20 seconds, and repeat on the opposite leg.

You can also do located/dedicated stretches following the example below.

Or follow one of these videos

Video 1 - Post Run Stretch (9.15)

Video 2 - Total Body Strech (9.29)

7. Finish
You are done! How do you feel? Hopefully you will feel good but tired, if that is the case congratulations, you now deserve a nice shower!

IMPORTANT
Please be aware that by not going to a gym or by having a fitness trainer you are not being followed by a professional that can create a personalised plan for you. Moreover, it is important that you know your body, so you should stop doing any exercise if you feel any pain, major discomfort, dizziness (or light-headed). If you have long-tem pain you should also seek a professional in your area.
"O Mundo de Mikey" is not responsible for any injuries that you may get with this "Improve Your Fitness" plan.
